Course Description
Art 1 is an introductory art class for students with little to no prior experience in the visual arts. Students will introduced to a variety of artistic medium, they will study artists and movements, art in various cultures, drawing, and the Elements and Principles of Design.
Goals of Visual Arts Education
Class Guidelines for Success
*Come to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn
*Gather materials at the beginning of activity and return neatly afterward
*Treat room, materials, teacher, and peers with respect *I do not allow students to do work for other students nor do I permit students to say negative comments about another student’s work*
*No foul or negative language is tolerated
* Listen to instructions carefully
*No gum or food in class (water bottles are okay)
*Throw “can’t” from your vocabulary – you CAN do it!
*Turn in work on time
Consequences:
If you break class or school rules and are disrespectful/disruptive-
You will receive a:
1. Verbal warning
2. Silent Lunch
3. Office referral- principal intervention, parent notification, documentation
4. Parent conference
If you do not do your class work or did not follow the instructions- you will lose daily points and if it is a continued problem an email will be sent home to notify parents of your behavior.

90-100=A
80-89= B
70-79=C
60-69= D
Less than 60= F
Note: While talent is not required motivation and effort are.
Course Breakdown:
There will be five units of study for this course:
Homework:
There will be very little homework if students manage their time wisely. The only exception being the Visual Notes Sketchbook which will be submitted weekly for grade.
Extra Credit:
Extra credit will be offered to help remediate any missing points. Once all work is completed and turned in students will have the opportunity to select an art task card project of their choice to work on independently. The project will be graded with a rubric and will added to the final grade as extra credit.
Absences/Tardies:
If you are going to be absent, speak to me to gather assignments and/or to schedule a time make up lost studio time. Students will be given plenty of time in class to complete all assignments, however, chronic absences and tardiness will affect your grade. The result will be missed studio time and you will be expected to make up your work outside of class.
Cell Phone Policy:
Cell phones will not be allowed in Art 1. Students will need to place their phones in a box at the beginning of class. Students may retrieve their phones at the end of class. This policy is in effect throughout the entire semester.

- Learn about famous artists and reproduce art in their style
- Express yourself visually
- Apply aesthetic judgment when viewing art
- Know the Elements of Art and how they affect a composition by using the Principles of Design
- Make the most out of every project your create and learn that you CAN produce beautiful artwork

- 60% Projects This is a studio based class so projects will be weighed heavily. Students will lose 10 points or 1 letter grade for each day a project is late. Students will be given a rubric for every project.
- 20% Participation includes attention to task, collaboration and cooperation, time management, task completion, daily warm-ups found at (http://eraarts.weebly.com) , project critiques, and care of classroom supplies
- 20 %Visual Journal/Sketchbooks/Quizzes:Students will be given assessments throughout the semester and a final project will be assigned for the semester exam. (Visual Journal/Sketchbook: Students will have weekly sketchbook assignments that are to be completed outside of class. They will be given a one week to complete their sketches. Visual Journals/Sketchbooks will be graded by a rubric. Information at the ERA art website http://eraarts.weebly.com )
